Drunk on the Moon or What lurks behind Number 9
Down there,” he said, “are people who will follow any dragon, worship any god, ignore any iniquity. All out of a kind of humdrum, everyday badness. Not the really high, creative loathsomeness of the great sinners, but a sort of mass-produced darkness of the soul. Sin, you might say, without a trace of originality. They accept evil not because they say yes, but because they don’t say no.

30 Day Book Challenge #15: Favourite Male Character

Sam Vimes from the Discworld Novels by Terry Pratchett.
This was a tough competition, the sad truth is that there are way more interesting male characters in most novels than girls. That’s how I figured out I needed to be a writer. As a kid, with an absence of heroines to pretend to be I started to make my own up.
But Sam Vimes is brilliant because he’s so different. He’s not young, he’s not virtuous and he’s not innocent. He makes difficult choices and sometimes he’s wrong. He’s dialogue is snappy and the reader actually believes his motivations and decisions. He’s a real world hero in a fantasy world and it works surprisingly well.

A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten year’s time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.” ~The Captain Samuel Vimes “Boots” theory of socioeconomic unfairness

[James’ top ten Discworld characters.] #2: Sam Vimes.

Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.”

[…]

“What kind of human creates his own policeman?”

“Any normal person, they crawl off if they get a beating. Or they have the sense to stay down, at least. But sometimes you get one who just won’t let go. Eight-stone weaklings who’ll try to head-butt Detritus. Evil little bantamweight bastards who’ll bust a bottle on the bar and try to attack five watchmen all at once. You know what I mean? Idiots who’ll go on fighting long after they should stop. The only way to put ‘em down is to put ‘em out.”

“I think I recognize the type, yes,” said Lady Sybil, with an irony that failed to register with Sam Vimes until some days later.
